Getting Comfortable in Your Dorm Room

Moving out of home for the first time is an incredibly exhilarating experience, but it can also be quite daunting. Leaving the nest means that you can eat when you want, sleep when you want, and dress how you want. Of course, when you’re eating ramen noodles and crashing on someone’s floor for the third night in a row, you might start missing home.

Learn how to deck out your dorm room to keep homesickness at bay with photos, discount bedding sets and a well set up study area.

1) Bring something special from home

The best way to make the transition between your new and old dwelling is to incorporate some things that are important to you. It may seem corny, but putting a photo of Mom and Dad on your desk can offer a world of comfort on those lonely days. Just be sure to leave them face down when doing something they wouldn’t approve of!

2) Show your personality

You might only be in this room for a semester, so it’s best to find ways to show your personality without any drastic DIY projects. Consider hanging a cork board you can attach pictures of your friends and important due dates to.

Another way to show your personality is through your bedding. A college student’s funds are often limited, so discount bedding sets are a must. You can find all sorts of fun prints, from autumn leaves to One Direction. A word to the wise – make sure your Bedding sets  aren’t white. It’s college – they’re gonna get dirty!

3) Be practical

Like it or not, you’ll be spending a lot of time studying. Make sure you’ve got a good desk you can sit up to, with adequate lighting to avoid eye strain. To make things more fun, why not invest in some super cute stationary? An ergonomic chair will have your back thanking you later.

If you’ve got the cash, a microwave and a kettle are the most important and budget friendly appliances you can have. In college, instant food reigns supreme.

4) Make it cosy

Dorm rooms can look a little cold and impersonal. Adding a rug or some mood lighting candles can soften things up a little. If you’re going to have friends over, a bean-bag or some floor cushions can also lift the atmosphere. Are things looking crowded? Placing a mirror on the wall can give an illusion of space.

With these tips, your dorm room should be looking a little more like home. Enjoy your first semester!
